Scaling critical risk management across a national healthcare group

A national private healthcare provider sought to strengthen its approach to managing critical risks across complex clinical and healthcare environments, recognising the limitations of traditional safety and compliance models in hospital settings.

Over a three-year period, Bluestone supported the design, implementation, launch, and adoption of a critical risk management program tailored to healthcare operations. The program commenced with a pilot phase to test both content and process, deliberately incorporating learning-focused principles to ensure the approach reflected how work is actually performed in hospitals.

Following a successful pilot, the range of critical risks included was expanded and the program was progressively rolled out across the national network of facilities. Executive and operational leader introductory workshops were facilitated at more than 30 hospital facilities across Australia, building a shared understanding of critical risks, critical controls, and leadership accountability within a healthcare context. A key feature of the program was the regular engagement of frontline workers by their operational leaders and senior executives, so they had first hand exposure to the issues experienced on the floor of each facility.

The program represented one of the earliest applications of a structured critical risk management approach in an Australian healthcare environment, supporting a shift toward more practical, operationally grounded management of material risks and strengthening leadership ownership at both executive and facility levels.
