Strengthening a critical risk program for a tier-1 iron ore mining group

A tier-1 iron ore miner sought to review and refresh its critical risk management program to ensure it remained contemporary, effective, and strongly owned by the operational business.

Bluestone HSE was engaged to conduct an independent review of the existing critical risk management arrangements, with a focus on updating and modernising the program while increasing ownership by subject matter experts, leaders, and operational personnel. A series of facilitated on-site bowtie workshops were conducted, providing structured opportunities for participants to actively shape the identification of threats, controls, and control weaknesses for each material risk.

All operational sites were visited as part of the engagement, with site inspections undertaken alongside the workshops to ensure critical risks and controls were assessed in the context of actual work environments. This approach strengthened alignment between documented critical risk frameworks and field-based realities, supporting more credible bowties, stronger operational ownership, and a more sustainable critical risk management program.
