Developing HSE leadership capability across a national engineering and services contractor

A large multi-disciplinary engineering and services organisation sought to align leaders across management, professional, and frontline roles on how health and safety is led and experienced day to day.

The program involves a two-day leadership workshop focused on building a shared understanding of key HSE themes, including culture, critical risk management, health and safety standards, and practical communication techniques to engage teams. The program addressed trust, empathy, psychological safety, learning from incidents, stop-work decision making, motivation, and accountability, with a strong emphasis on everyday leadership behaviours such as running effective pre-start meetings and involving teams in HSE discussions. Highly interactive activities were used throughout to translate concepts into practical behaviours.

To support sustained implementation, the program was complemented by small-group online coaching sessions following the workshop, reinforcing application of key concepts back in the workplace.

To date, some 40 workshops have been delivered over several years by Bluestone facilitators across Australia, with the program continuing into 2026.
